Xiaomi: A Chinese Startup Out to Challenge Google, Amazon

Xiaomi, a Chinese startup that helped pioneer the trend toward ultra-low-priced smartphones, is preparing for what would be the biggest initial public offering since e-commerce giant Alibaba's in 2014.The 8-year-old is a star among the Chinese unicorns, a term that refers to startup companies that are valued at more than $1 billion (roughly Rs. 6,786 crore). It has a dedicated Chinese fan base and its media-savvy leader is an Asian celebrity. But it is untested outside the region.

Can a Chinese company be cool outside Asia? Can Xiaomi achieve its goal of expanding beyond hardware to be an Internet service company?

A guide to Xiaomi and its upcoming IPO in Hong Kong:

Where did Xiaomi come from?
Xiaomi - pronounced "SHEE-YOW'-mee" - was founded in 2010 by CEO Jun Lei and seven colleagues who included veterans of Alphabet, Google, Microsoft, and Motorola.

Their first smartphone, the Mi1 released in 2011, was an instant hit with little marketing. Consumers buzzed about its low price of CNY 1,999 (roughly Rs. 20,900) and competitive quality.

It helped to ignite an unusual fan culture on which Xiaomi has built its product development. Customers take part in design decisions by sending suggestions over social media.

In 2013, Xiaomi sold more handsets in China than Apple. The next year, it became China's top-selling smartphone.

The company later was passed in sales volume by local rivals Huawei, Oppo and Vivo. But after a slump in 2016, Xiaomi's growth rate outpaced other smartphone makers in the following year. While Samsung, Apple and Huawei saw flat or 10 percent growth or less in 2017, Xiaomi sales jumped 58 percent, according to IHS.

Last year, the company had a 6 percent share of the global smartphone market, despite minimal presence in Europe and the United States.

How much money does Xiaomi make?
Xiaomi lost money last year. A lot.

The company reported a loss of CNY 43.9 billion (roughly Rs. 4,58,00 crores) on revenue of CNY 114.6 billion (roughly Rs. 11,95,60 crores).

Even if the company turns that around, CEO Lei has promised to keep prices low for consumers by holding profit margins on hardware sales to 5 percent, a stance that might rattle investors.

"Xiaomi is more than a hardware company," said Lei in an open letter to investors. "Although our hardware business is essential to building our user base, we do not expect it to be the main source of our profits."

Xiaomi makes 90 percent of its revenue from hardware sales but calls itself an internet content company. It wants to make money by delivering services to the more than 100 million users of its connected devices and 190 million users who use its software MIUI.

How much is the IPO expected to raise?
The IPO is expected to raise billions of dollars - possibly the biggest haul since Alibaba raised $22 billion (roughly Rs. 14,93,02 crores) in 2014 - though forecasts of how much have declined.

Investors are likely to value Xiaomi at $63-$68 billion (roughly Rs. 42,75,50 crores - Rs. 46,14,81, crores), down from earlier expectations of as much as $100 billion (roughly Rs. 67,86,49 crores) due to its "low profitability," said Choi Won-seok of Shinhan Investment in a report.

"Compared to other Chinese tech companies, it will be an attractive price point for investors," wrote Choi.

Why are investors optimistic?
Xiaomi is the rare Chinese brand that has succeeded abroad.

"Xiaomi is probably one of the few Chinese companies that have gotten enough international attention not in a negative way," said Melissa Chau, associate research director at research firm IDC.

In India, it unseated Samsung as No. 1 in smartphone sales. This is a bright spot because India is one of the few remaining handset markets with big growth, said Chau.

South Korean trendsetters love Xiaomi. Other Asian fans rave on YouTube and social media about Xiaomi air purifiers, suitcases and vacuum cleaners.

Admirers compare Xiaomi's minimalist design to Apple or Japan's Balmuda, known for its sleek beauty.

It is also one of the few hardware manufacturers that have been able to use their hardware products as an entry point to selling services and software.

"If you think of other hardware makers who do that, you can only think of Apple," Chau said.

In the letter to investors, Lei said the eight co-founders wanted to make "the coolest company in the hearts of our users."

"Good companies make profits, great companies also win over people's hearts," Lei wrote. "We pride ourselves even more in being a technology company with a rare 'fan culture'."

What comes next?
But can it stir similar enthusiasm among investors and Western audiences?

A key challenge will be winning over U.S. and European consumers who might be more wary of Chinese brands.

Another challenge is to show to investors that, like Google or Amazon.com Inc., it can make a profit from services, reducing reliance on handset sales.

Selling Chinese internet services to global consumers could be tougher than selling Chinese phones.

Xiaomi founder's vision however echoes that of many Silicon Valley internet companies.

"Fundamentally, the Internet is all about transparency, efficiency and equality," said Lei in his letter to investors. "We want to allow everyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, nationality, or education level, to enjoy the benefits of technology."

Scientists create 3D printed human corneas to solve shortage of eye donors

Scientists create 3D printed human corneas to solve shortage of eye donors

In a first, scientists have created 3D printed human corneas that could solve the shortage of available eye donors and help millions of blind people gain sight again.
As the outermost layer of the human eye, the cornea has an important role in focusing vision.
Yet there is a significant shortage of corneas available to transplant, with 10 million people worldwide requiring surgery to prevent corneal blindness as a result of diseases such as trachoma, an infectious eye disorder.
In addition, almost 5 million people suffer total blindness due to corneal scarring caused by burns, lacerations, abrasion or disease.
The proof-of-concept research, published in the journal Experimental Eye Research, shows how stem cells from a healthy donor cornea were mixed together with alginate and collagen to create a solution that could be printed, a 'bio-ink'.
Using a simple low-cost 3D bio-printer, the bio-ink was successfully extruded in concentric circles to form the shape of a human cornea. It took less than 10 minutes to print. The stem cells were then shown to grow.
"Many teams across the world have been chasing the ideal bio-ink to make this process feasible," said Che Connon, a professor at Newcastle University in the UK, who led the research.
"Our unique gel - a combination of alginate and collagen - keeps the stem cells alive whilst producing a material which is stiff enough to hold its shape but soft enough to be squeezed out the nozzle of a 3D printer," Connon said.
"This builds upon our previous work in which we kept cells alive for weeks at room temperature within a similar hydrogel. Now we have a ready to use bio-ink containing stem cells allowing users to start printing tissues without having to worry about growing the cells separately," he said.
The scientists also demonstrated that they could build a cornea to match a patient's unique specifications.
The dimensions of the printed tissue were originally taken from an actual cornea. By scanning a patient's eye, they could use the data to rapidly print a cornea which matched the size and shape.
"Our 3D printed corneas will now have to undergo further testing and it will be several years before we could be in the position where we are using them for transplants," said Connon.
"However, what we have shown is that it is feasible to print corneas using coordinates taken from a patient eye and that this approach has potential to combat the worldwide shortage," he said.

Ranbir Kapoor on relationship with Alia Bhatt

Ranbir Kapoor on relationship with Alia Bhatt: It's too new

if the grapevine is to be believed, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt have kindled a romance, now that they are working together in Ayan Mukerji's Brahmastra. And Ranbir might just have confirmed the rumours. According to Pinkvilla, when he was asked about his relationship with Alia, he said it was "too new" to talk about.
Meanwhile, Alia has made no attempt to hide her admiration for Ranbir. When Alia was gearing up to make a splash in Bollywood, she had shouted from the rooftops that she had a massive crush on Ranbir, and had even expressed her desire to marry him. And it looks like nothing has changed. In an interview with India Today Television last month, Alia called him her "biggest crush of all time".
Incidentally, when she was asked how she deals with the link-up rumours, she said, "I don't have to deal with them, because if it's true, it's true. And if it's false, it's false. Let's just say everything is not because of a movie and everything is not for publicity."
Ranbir and Alia have already finished shooting for the first schedule of Brahmastra in Bulgaria. Brahmastra, which also stars Amitabh Bachchan and Mouni Roy, is being made as a fantasy trilogy, the first installment of which is slated to release in 2019.
When Alia said she wanted to marry Ranbir

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are the "hook-up of 2018", if designer Manish Malhotra's words are anything to go by. The two are finally working together in Ayan Mukerji's Brahmastra, and it has sent rumour mills into a tizzy.
In the past, Alia has been very vocal about her massive crush on Ranbir and even expressed her desire to marry him. Alia reminisced about her first interaction with Ranbir on Karan Johar's chat show in 2013.
She said, "I remember the first time I spoke to Ranbir. You (Karan Johar) called him up when Rockstar just released and you said, 'Here, talk to Ranbir. Tell him how much you love him'. And I spoke so much rubbish. I was just talking non-stop, and he was like, 'Yeah, that's very nice, Alia.'"
"Obviously, I have hung out with him after that, and I still think he is really adorable. And I still want to marry him," the Dear Zindagi actress went on to add.
Incidentally, Ranbir was then in a relationship with Katrina Kaif, but Alia was unfazed by it. When Karan asked Alia if Katrina was aware of her plans to marry Ranbir, she said, "Everybody knows my plans. I have gone on record and I have said it. I'm very open about it except to Ranbir."
Now that Ranbir and Alia are working together in Ayan Mukerji's Brahmastra, the grapevine is abuzz with speculation that there is a romance brewing between them. The rumours gained momentum when Ranbir and Alia entered Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja's reception together.
Interestingly, they crossed paths with Ranbir's ex-girlfriend Katrina at the reception. But if you thought that Alia and Katrina's friendship had soured because of the former's closeness with Ranbir, you were wrong. Karan Johar took to Instagram to share a selfie of himself with Katrina, Alia and Gauri Khan, putting an end to rumours of a spat.

2018 FIFA World Cup updates

2018 FIFA World Cup: A World Cup without Buffon and Robben

As the world waits for the biggest footballing extravaganza to begin in Russia on June 14, some of biggest names of world football are actually not a part of the FIFA World Cup this time.
With the world's eyes fixed on the happenings in Russia for the next month, the Cristiano Ronaldos, Lionel Messis and Neymars will look to shine bright but there will be world-class players, who will only get to watch the action from afar.
Three major teams have missed the chance of making it to the World Cup finals this time -- Italy, Netherlands and Chile -- and with that a host of big names will be absent from the tournament. We take a look at five players whom the audience might miss come the World Cup.
Perhaps the biggest name of all to miss out on the ticket to Russia. Buffon, 40, was looking for a final hurray at the 2018 World Cup but his farewell came far earlier than he expected and wanted.Italy, who were placed in the same group as Spain during the World Cup qualifiers, finished second with 23 points compared to Spain's 28. Thereafter, the Azurri lost 1-0 in the play-offs to Sweden and failed to make it to the World Cup for the first time in 60 years.Buffon, teary-eyed and with a heavy lump in his throat, bid farewell to the Italian national team. The Italian keeper has one World Cup to his name that he won in 2006 against France in penalties.
Sanchez began playing for Chile in 2006 and since then, this is the first World Cup La Roja are missing. Sanchez is a crafty forward, who has the knack for both scoring and assisting. His movement is what delights people and that will surely be missed in Russia.
Sanchez has scored a total of 39 goals for Chile but scored only seven goals in 18 matches during the qualifiers and failed to take Chile over the line.
Chile had a heartbreak on the final day of the qualifiers as their chance of a play-off against New Zealand was also kicked out by Peru.
Sanchez who shifted to Manchester United from Arsenal in January, will now have to wait for another World Cup to make an impact.
Robben is one of the biggest names to miss out on the World Cup and he is another player, who is missing the extravaganze as his team failed to qualify.
After the European Cup disaster, Netherlands once again fell short and failed to make it to Russia. Grouped alongside tough opponents in France and Sweden, Netherlands could not hold their own and finished third with 19 points from 10 games.
Robben, who has played three World Cup for Netherlands since joining the senior team in 2003, is known for his pace and creatively on the flank. Even the youngsters have a problem keeping up with the 34-year-old.
34 years of age, the World Cup in Russia would have been Robben's last but he was robbed off the chance of shining for the last time at the biggest stage in football.
Gareth Bale, who recently scored a sensational goal for Real Madrid in the Champions League final to lead them to a historic third straight Champions League final, will not be in Russia.
Bale's Wales failed to qualify for the World Cup after they finished third in their group of the UEFA World Cup qualfiers. Wales, right after their historic semi-finals appearance in Euro 2016, finished below Serbia and Republic of Ireland in the group.
Apart from solid performance from the first two nations, it was an out of form Bale that impacted Wales chances. Bale scored only four goals in 10 matches for his country and was unable to provide enough support to Ramsey to get through.
Giorgio Chiellini's 2014 World Cup is best remembered for the bite he got from Uruguay's Luis Suarez on his shoulder. A veteran Italian defenders, Chiellini is an essential part of the solid Italian defence.
With Italy not qualifying for the World Cup, Chiellini is going to miss the trip to Russia after having travelled to 2010 and 2014 World Cup with Italy.
Even though Chiellini began playing for Italy in 2004, he was not part of the World Cup-winning side of 2006 and is yet to lay his hands on that elusive trophy.
Chiellini is one of the pillars of modern Italian football and his presence is surely going to be missed in Russia.

Ramdev's Kimbho app ready to challenge WhatsApp

Ramdev's Kimbho is impossible to understand and gone but here are 10 quick points you should know in case it is back

Baba Ramdev's Kimbho app came, made headlines, and then mysteriously disappeared from everywhere. Only a few "lucky" users managed to download the app and many are just left wondering what was the app all about.
So for those of you who yet don't know what is the new Kimbho app or how does it work, this one if for you all. Kimbho is a messaging chat app launched by Patanjali Communications on Wednesday with an aim to take on the likes of Hike, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
Kimbho is quite vocal about its intentions to take on WhatsApp. The app bluntly asks users to go for Kimbho and boycott WhatsApp. "Kimbho ko karey swikar, WhatsApp ka purn bahiskar. Most secure Chat, Free Phone & Video Calls," says the company on its official Twitter page and this is the message sent to users across WhatsApp, Messenger or any other platform when you share the app's invite link.
Kimbho app is an Indian version of WhatsApp. The app when available was free to download from Play Store and runs on Android. Here are 10 quick things you should know about the app that will make you "pro-Kimbho" in case the app is back on Play Store.
Kimbho is a Sanskrit phrase meaning how are you or what's up. The app has been accused of being a rebranded version of BOLO app. It has also been mocked for having Pakistani Actress Mawra Hocane as its poster girl, contradicting its Swadeshi app slogan.
-- Kimbho app is free to download and is 40MB in size.
-- Patanjali Communication claims that Kimbho is end-to-end encrypted by Advanced Encryption Standard(AES).
-- The app supports Shake feature to share your location. So, you just have to shake your phone if you want to share your location with any of your contacts.
-- You can also make doodles in Kimbho. Ramdev's swadeshi app allow you to be creative with your chats. Hence, doodle option. There is a paintbrush icon in the app that allows you to draw or sketch anything you want.
-- Kimbho allows you to send photos, texts, videos, voice messages, GiF images and more.
-- Kimbho app is also equipped with a Ghost chatting feature that auto deletes your messages after few seconds.
-- Kimbho also supports voice and video calls.
-- There is a Follow Celebrities page also present inside the Kimbho app but the page was empty when we last checked on it. We are guessing that it may be something like Instagram where users can follow celebrities on Kimbho.

Election results leave BJP camp in sadness

Bypoll results leave BJP camp in sadness, opposition leaders delighted in new-found integration

Ahead of next year's general elections, a united opposition got a major boost on Thursday when it delivered a huge blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), defeating it in the Kairana Lok Sabha by election in Uttar Pradesh and Bhandara-Gondiya in Maharashtra while the saffron party managed to retain the Palghar parliamentary seat and win only one out of the 10 assembly seats in 10 states.
Out of the four Lok Sabha constituencies that voted on May 24, the Nagaland Lok Sabha constituency returned the candidate of the ruling Nagaland Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), a BJP ally, who defeated the Naga People's Front (NPF) candidate. The real disappointment for the BJP and its party president Amit Shah came from Kairana -- a seat the BJP won in 2014 -- where the opposition had put up a common candidate.
Ajit Singh's Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate Tabassum Hasan, supported by the Congress, the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), trounced the BJP's Mriganka Singh in Kairana in Uttar Pradesh by over 55,000 votes.
Tabassum Hasan will now become the only Muslim MP from Uttar Pradesh since 2014 elections.
The BJP along with its allies had swept 73 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh in the 2014 general elections and won an overwhelming 312 seats out of a total 423 in the state assembly elections last year.
Along with the Kairana reverse, the BJP also suffered the ignominy of losing the Noorpur assembly seat to the SP in the byelection in Uttar Pradesh. SP's candidate Naimul Hassan defeated BJP's Avani Singh by over 6,200 votes.
The Kairana defeat for the BJP comes on top of the failure to retain Gorakhpur and Phulpur in the by elections in March this year in which the SP candidates, with the backing of BSP, had defeated BJP candidates.
In Palghar Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) win came in a triangular fight in which the candidate of its sulking ally, the Shiv Sena, cornered a considerable chunk of votes. BJP's Rajendra Gavit defeated Shiv Sena's Srinivas Wanga by over 29,500 votes.
However, the BJP candidate Hemant Patel had to bite the dust in the Bhandara-Gondiya seat in the state with the NCP's Madhukar Kukde snatching the constituency that was won by the BJP in the 2014 poll. The Congress supported the NCP candidate in the current by poll. Kukde defeated Patel by over 45,000 votes.
RLD leader Jayant Chaudhary hoped that the combined opposition would keep its momentum to defeat the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections next year. "I am confident that the RLD will play a role in how to carry forward the opposition unity and alliance. Whatever the alliance, we will play a positive role," he told reporters.
Of the 10 assembly seats where by-polls were held last Thursday, the BJP scored just one in Uttarakhand while the Congress won Punjab's Shahkot, Karnataka's RR Nagar and Meghalaya's Ampati that made it the single largest party in the northeastern state.
The Trinamool Congress won the Maheshtala seat in West Bengal while the CPI-M candidate defeated a Congress rival in Kerala's Chengannur.Jailed politician Lalu Prasad RJD defeated the ruling BJP and JD-U's joint candidate in Bihar Jokihat assembly seat where it was more of a battle of prestige for the former allies - the RJD and the JD-U. RJD's Shahnawaz Alam beat a JD-U candidate by over 41,000 votes.
Lalu Prasad's son Tejashwi Yadav, a former Deputy Chief Minister, said the loss was a lesson for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who broke away from the anti-BJP grand alliance and joined hands with the BJP in Bihar.
"Want to thank all the opposition parties for coming together against the BJP This loss proves that Nitish Kumar has deceived the people of Bihar and people have responded to it. People of Bihar are avenging the U-turn taken by Nitish Kumar," Tejashwi Yadav said.
The RJD leader also minced no words in thanking the opposition unity after the verdict.
"Nation has rejected the poisonous politics of polarisation, vendetta, hatred & fascism in #BypollsVerdict," Tejashwi tweeted while thanking leaders like Mayawati and Mamata Banerjee.
The Jokihat assembly seat was left vacant after the sitting JD-U lawmaker quit the party and joined the RJD following Nitish Kumar's decision to go with the BJP last year. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha bagged both the Assembly seats of Silli and Gomia in the state.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was not far behind in terming the outcome of the bypolls in Kairana and Noorpur in Uttar Pradesh as a defeat of divisive politics.
"This is a defeat for those who do not believe in democracy and play divisive politics. People have given a befitting reply to the BJP," he said at a press conference.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh who hailed the Congress's victory in the Shahkot bypoll as a "vindication" of the government's people-centric policies, a rejection of the "negative" politics of SAD and "decimation" of AAP.
Talking to media persons, Singh said the BJP was faring "badly" all over the country - a clear sign of the mood of the people ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
However, trying to see the positives in BJP's poll reverses, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said one has to take two steps backward before a big leap.
